Kirin and Bakeneko debuted at a group show at the Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles called “EAST/WEST”. The gallery works with a number of Asian artists as well as American artists, and this show was specifically meant to mix Eastern/Western traditions from various different perspectives. Japan has such an exciting number of mythological animals, one of which is the Kirin (sort of dragony-unicorny-giraffe). Kirin is wrapped around a shamisen (traditional Japanese instrument). Another mythical beast in Japanese folklore is the Bakeneko (monster cat, similar to a Nekomata or other Yokai – ish cats). For the most part, they tend to look like regular cats, they have two tails.
