Historic Reproduction Samplers from The Scarlet letter. Origin and date: Scottish 1820. Linen count and finished size: 25-count, unbleached, 17? X19-1/2? Stitches: Cross, counted thread, freehand satin, stem, and upright Gobelin stitches. The mansion depicted on this formal Scottish sampler appears on many other Scottish samplers, but has never been identified. Other typical Scottish motifs – the peacocks, initials of both parents, illumination of letters by double running stitch, and rabbits – appear on this lovely piece. Scottish Samplers: The bold use of strong primary color, particularly reds and greens, distinctive architectural style (very geometric, often with strong vertical lines and French influences), heraldic peacocks (usually with seven tailfeathers), dogs, rabbits, illuminated lettering, and other symbolic motifs, make Scottish samplers quite a recognizable group. Archaic designs often appear on Scottish works one hundred years after having made their debut on English samplers. The arms of Scotland, the “mystery mansions, ” many groups of initials (usually family members), peculiar shaded mounds upon which often sit urns, fountains, Adams and Eves, or groups of odd little rabbits stacked up or all in a row, are specific elements of design seen on this regional group of samplers. Historic Reproduction Samplers from The Scarlet letter. Background is light brown. Some pictures lightened to show details. Although there has not been the extensive research and study of English Quaker samplers as there has been of their American counterparts, we believe that this sampler was created under the tutelage of a Quaker sewing instructress in England. The fine bleached linen and wide range of brightly colored silks (16 shades) point to a more formal (and British) atmosphere in which it was created. Important design elements linking this to Quaker schools include the lettering style and the use of ligatues (two united letters). The counted thread satin stitched design at the bottom resembles pattern darning also found on Quaker samplers. Origin and date: England, circa 1782 Rated: Intermediate Stitches: Cross, counted satin, freehand satin Source: Private collection. From the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Historic Reproduction Samplers from The Scarlet letter. Try as we might, we cannot find another sampler to compare with this one by Sarah Brignell. It is a sampler unto itself: truly an original piece of folk art. The tiny central cartouche with the densely stitched scene floats like a little world unto itself in the midst of the exuberant garden of flowers vining around all four sides.
