A historical English needlework piece from 1699 that is part of the extensive collection at the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg. The original sampler was completed by Ann Holewll (sometimes spelled Holwell) on November 14, 1699, when she was 15 years old, under the tutelage of a teacher named Judith Hayle in Ipswich, England. The sampler is notable for a moral verse inscription. Key motifs and features include. Bands of flowers, acorns, and strawberries. Initials for both Ann Holewll (“AH”) and her teacher, Judith Hayle (“IH”). Depictions of a lion, stags, and birds. Various stitches including cross, double running, eyelet, and satin stitches. Set is brand new, never used and complete.
